Adventures in Appomattox
As mentioned in one of my previous posts, our family is going to take a few days and visit a few of the historic sights in Virginia located nearby. Our first stop, as you know, was Lexington, and our second stop? Appomattox Courthouse; the very place where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant, thus beginning the end of the Civil War.
You may be interested to know that the surrender didn’t actually take place inside a courthouse, but simply the home of a townsman, Mr. McLean. Appomattox Courthouse is the name of the entire village, and not just one building.
Just a little history trivia for you! At least, I thought it was neat.
Last week we toured Lexington by ourselves, but this time we were joined by some of our friends from church. It was great getting to know their family more, and so together we had a lovely time! We spent the day walking from a historic house to a plaque, from gift shops to the county jail, and stopping at each to snap pictures and learn new things about Appomattox and the Civil War surrender. The Ranger who guided our group was very informative, and had many neat little stories to tell us. There is so much history in that little town! I loved it!
Also interesting to note, cameras are a useful tool in the art of fun, adventure, and oftentimes sillism. Have you noticed? You’ll see what I mean when viewing a few of the pictures we took!
